BryanLGH Surgeon Mending Hearts; Saving Young Lives in Rwanda
Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Robert Oakes, BryanLGH Heart Institute, is currently serving as a volunteer surgeon on a mission trip with the non-profit organization Team Heart in Rwanda.
Team Heart is a non-profit organization that includes volunteers from nursing, perfusion, respiratory therapy and a wide range of non-clinical positions.
According to Dr. Oakes’ first blog post, most of his patients are very young and have severely diseased heart valves as a result of rheumatic fever. His first patient upon arriving in Rwanda was a 14 year-old boy.
BryanLGH Heart Institute is very proud to have Dr. Oakes involved in this humanitarian effort. Dr. Oakes' professional contacts through Harvard Medical School and fellowships at Stanford University Medical Center provided him with this great opportunity.
People can follow the important, life-saving work of Dr. Oakes and this team of volunteers on the BryanLGH Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bryanlgh.
