Trauma Champion Event
Two young men, two life-threatening automobile crashes, and the statewide Trauma System that saved their lives.
The third annual Tribute to Trauma Champions event recognized Jason Kort and Cody Van Pelt, two remarkable trauma survivors, and honored the professionals involved in saving their lives. During the event, their stories of tragedy and triumph, and the dedication and teamwork of their Trauma Champions were told. The event honored individuals involved in their care from all aspects of the trauma system including EMS providers, rural trauma center personnel, physicians, BryanLGH staff members and rehabilitation professionals, as well as family, community members and ongoing care providers.
One year ago, in a rollover accident on I-80, Cody sustained critical, life-threatening injuries: a concussion, collapsed lungs, rib fractures, spleen laceration, pelvic fractures, ruptured bladder, leg and ankle fractures, and extensive bruising and abrasions. With the help of his trauma champions, Cody regained his life, graduated from high school and now attends the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Jason's remarkable journey began about two years ago. After a day of refereeing basketball games, he was involved in a car crash on the way to his home in Blue Hill, Neb. Critically injured, Jason was transported to the BryanLGH Trauma Center, where aggressive critical care treatment, including a special ventilator and techniques to increase oxygen levels, were taken to save his life.
