About Your Rehab Team
Inpatient rehabilitation draws on the strengths and special training of many different healthcare professionals. You may see all or a handful of the following during your stay at BryanLGH:
The medical director is a physician specially trained in rehabilitation who coordinates your overall treatment and recovery process.
The rehabilitation nurses give you around-the-clock personal care and support and teach you and your family more about your abilities and treatments. Your nurse has completed additional training in rehabilitation and is a good resource for answers to your questions.
Physical therapists help improve your ability to perform activities such as moving in bed, transferring in and out of a wheelchair, and standing and walking. Depending on your ability, your physical therapists may train you to use braces, artificial limbs or a mobility device such as a walker.
Speech pathologists help improve swallowing, speaking, reading, writing and thinking to facilitate a safe return to your job, home, school and/or community.
Occupational therapists focus on improving your everyday living skills, including bathing, dressing, cooking and performing job-related tasks. These therapists also work with cognitive skills (the way you think) and help you increase strength and coordination in your arms and hands.
A social worker explores with you the many changes in your life brought about by your illness or disability and how to deal with these issues.
A discharge planning specialist will help you and your family make arrangements for your safe transition home or to the next level of care.
Other members of your rehabilitation team may include a recreational therapist, respiratory therapist, dietitian, pharmacist, vocational counselor, an orthotist, who designs and fits braces, and prosthetist, who creates and fits artificial limbs.
