The BryanLGH Diabetes Center offers many programs to help you live with diabetes. With education, you can take control of your diabetes to live a healthier and longer life.
We will give you the skills you need and help you along the way. RNs and registered dietitians who are certified diabetes educators teach all programs. The American Diabetes Association recognizes our Diabetes Center for excellence in diabetes education.
Outpatient Diabetes Education Program
Participants meet for an evaluation with a trained staff member, and based on your needs a teaching program is developed just for you. Topics include nutrition, medications, exercise, lifestyle changes, complications and problem solving.
Carbohydrate Counting Class (Nutrition I), Advanced Nutrition and Dining Out with Diabetes
These classes teach you how to achieve better glucose control by using the appropriate amounts and types of carbohydrates in meal planning. You will learn how much carbohydrate your body needs at meals and snacks and how to adjust carbohydrate intake for specific situations such as extra activity, low blood glucose or illness.
A comprehensive education program with follow-up for women diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
The goals of the program are to:
- Help ensure the baby's health and strength
- Control weight gain of the baby
- Help ensure a safe delivery without complications
- Improve and maintain mother's health
- Educate the mother in prevention of Type 2 diabetes
- Provide information on blood glucose monitoring, nutrition, exercise and stress
Intensive Management
This program helps you manage proper use of insulin to carbohydrate and proper use of correction factor. Each client learns to make self adjustments in their diabetes management plan to achieve blood glucose control.
Insulin Management
The insulin pump program provides adequate glycemic control to those unable to attain this through basal and bolus insulin injections. The insulin pump is currently the only available treatment that closely mimics the body's natural ability of pancreatic insulin delivery. It requires a sophisticated delivery system and education.
Diabetes educators are trained to teach clients how to start and maintain the use of any insulin pump. One-on-one intensive training allows each client to independently manage blood glucose levels and avoid complications.
Education throughout the Region
The BryanLGH Diabetes Center has helped Heartland Heath Alliance hospitals establish diabetes programs with American Diabetes Association recognition.
